Plan Versus Reality

Select categories, compare actual against budget over time

This is one of the most powerful features of YAFFA's reporting suite. The budget chart shows actual spending against your planned budgets for the selected categories, with a moving-average trend line to help you judge whether the direction is stabilizing, drifting, or repeatedly overshooting. Seeing these trends allows you to set targets and budgets that will be used for forecasting.

The chart plots your actual recorded spending as bars against a dashed budget line generated from your recurring budgets and scheduled transactions. Switch between month, quarter, and year views depending on how much detail the question needs.

Where the budget line comes from

Nobody re-enters a budget every month in YAFFA. Planned values are expanded from your recurring budget definitions into monthly instances, up to your configured planning horizon — so the budget line on this chart is only as accurate as the recurring items behind it. If a category looks unexpectedly off-plan, check the underlying schedule on the budgets and scheduled transactions screen before assuming the actual spending is the problem.

A direction tool, not a monthly scorecard

This chart is built to answer is this category drifting?, not did I hit this month's target exactly? Broad category selections make for a less specific story; narrow ones can produce a sparse chart. Multi-currency comparisons are normalized to your base currency for a practical, interpretive view rather than formal accounting precision.

The supporting table underneath

Below the chart, a table lists the scheduled and budgeted transactions feeding the selected categories — start date, schedule, next date, active status, and type — with direct actions to edit, clone, replace, or delete. It is the fastest way to go from a chart that looks off-plan to the recurring definition responsible for it.
